Casualties turned up for their eleven-a-side game,
but unfortunately nobody told Mavericks, who only brought six –
amateurs! After a week of
furious debate involving many club members about Steve’s clubbing gear
(unfortunately no pictures survive), this was always going to be an
interesting game, with everyone waiting with baited breath for Neil to
jump down off the ref’s chair to claim a ball on the other side of the
court. Mick set an example to us all as the only person with the sartorial elegance of
tucking his shirt into his shorts – looking every inch the part of team
dad.
The
first set saw an exchange of points until at 12 all, Dale’s shout of
“finger” on getting a touch clearly upset the opposition and they fell
apart, winning only two more points as the mighty Casualties went from
strength to strength, on the back of some fine setting by Maria and
all-round good smashing.

Debs - it's the quiet ones you have

Casualties
went backwards in the second set, spending a good deal of it on the floor,
especially Debs who seemed intent on doing the splits as part of her
audition for the upcoming feature, “Debbie does Doncaster.” Mavs
eventually took it 25-15.
Didn’t
really notice the third set as being a bloke, I’m clearly not capable of
doing the tally, the board and making a note or two while reading a text
message. Sorry, but we won it
anyway!
The
fifth set followed the pattern of much of the game as Mavericks struggled
to keep pace with a more organised and, indeed, skilled Casualties and we
closed it out to 18 for yet another table-top confirming win.
No
five set thriller this time but some excellent setting by Maria, Debbie
and Gudrun, some awesome blocking by the tall ones and some hitting that
went in more than out made this a comfortable win.
(Thanks to hungover Ian - our new match reporter for
the text)
