Massive crowds turned out to watch what turned out to be a classic match. Over 20,000 packed into the stadium and many were turned away at the door by the  police. Even Johnny Wilkinson was in the crowd, checking out his competition for Sports Personality of the year.

Casualties started as though some mean & nasty surgeon had removed their talent glands, and they shot to a world record loss of 9-25 in 5.3 seconds. Johnny Cocktail had been practicing hitting the ball into the back wall all week, and during the set he was faultless at it. Only Jess redeemed herself (...but by looking good, rather than playing well...)

Team:
Belinda, Jess, Neil, Steve, Mick, Jezz, Johnny, Gudren, Mantis, Chas

Johnny W now has some competition

The second set saw a switch of players, but Casualties still made too many basic errors. At one point it got so bad that even Gudren made a mistake, and Neil's hair got disturbed.

The 3rd set was a big improvement in performance as Casualties finally remembered how to play. Reluctant hero, Chas came off the bench, and was the steadying influence the team needed. They also brought on Debs purely to improve the quality of arses on court (and by complete accident, improved the setting too). Johnny worked out how to hit somewhere in between the back wall and the bottom of the net and Casualties stopped making schoolboy errors. In a nail biting finish, they saved themselves from humiliation and took the set with a gorgeous pin point hit down the line into the back corner. I suppose I have to admit it was Neil.

The 4th set continued with Casualties playing as well as they have ever done. Vandals were a very good side and made few errors, repeatedly picking up many big hits which would normally be winners. Casualties stuck to their game plan of... err...hmmm? Did we have one? Anyway, it worked, and with Gudren picking up everything, Casualties took the set to force a decider. The crowd went wild.

As the excitement reached fever pitch, both teams put on their best. It was equal all the way, with everyone on tenterhooks. Casualties faced match point at 13-14, but Johnny saved the day with another great hit. The team held on to take a great and well deserved victory. Celebrations went on well into the night for everyone except Johnny Wilkinson and Chas who had to go to London for the Sports Personality of the Year award.
